The Ten Commandments

"And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.’"

I. You shall have no other God’s before me

II. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath, or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation or those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep My commandments.

III. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

IV. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

V. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

VI. You shall not murder.

VII. You shall not commit adultery.

VIII. You shall not steal.

IX. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

X. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s spouse, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

Exodus 20:1-17 [NIV]

The Shema

Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. [Deuteronomy 6:4,5]

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.

Amen.

The Greatest Commandment

Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied, " ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." [Matt. 22:34-48 NIV]

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth;

And in Jesus Christ, His only son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into Hades; the third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Nicene Creed (Contemporary)

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible;

And I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the singular Son of God, dwelling with His Father before all worlds; Who is God of God, Light of Light, Very God of Very God, Pre-existing everything, not created; Whose substance is the very same as the Father, by whom all things were made.

Who for us all, and for our salvation, came down from heaven; who became incarnate through the Holy Spirit by the virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried; On the third day He rose again according to the scriptures; He ascended into heaven, and now sits at the right hand of the Father. He shall come again in glory to judge both the living and the dead; His kingdom shall have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit; the Lord and Giver of Life; who proceeds from the Father and the Son; who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; who spoke through the prophets.

And I believe in one Holy Universal and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge the need for only one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. And I look for the Resurrection of the dead; and the Life of the world to come. Amen.
