Cedartown First Presbyterian Church
Our History
First Presbyterian Church has a long and distinguished history in Cedartown. The church dates its origins back to 1853, but its present organization dates from 1873.
The Original Sanctuary was located in downtown Cedartown at the intersection of Philpot and Herbert Streets. Weaknesses in that structure forced the congregation to consider relocating, which they did in 1964.
We moved to our present location on West John Hand Road at a time when the paved roads in Cedartown went only as far north as Peeks Park. At the time, the churchs new location was considered to be on the very edge of town. If only those pioneers had known what God had in store for us. In 1976, an addition comprised of a Fellowship Hall, Library and classrooms was added to the church.
We are a member congregation in the Cherokee Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church, USA.
Our Present
While we are in many ways an 'older congregation', we are also a congregation with active families, teenagers, children, and infants. We are a generationally diverse congregation with members representing every age and interest.
We are a congregation that is growing in faith, in size, and in service. We are faithful in our worship and committed in our witness. We expect to grow in our faith and to spend time with each other in Christian fellowship.
We invite you to join us as we look to the future!
Our Church in Worship
Morning Worship, 11:00 AM each Sunday (Staffed Nursery is Provided)
(See sample worship bulletin here.)
Our worship service is a blend of both formal and contemporary worship elements. While Presbyterian worship is known for its dignified worship, and our church is no exception, we also realize that there are many wonderful hymns and praise songs being written today. Our worship incorporates them both. It is in worship that we find our spirits lifted, our minds illumined, and our lives challenged by the saving love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We come to worship expecting to hear the Word of God clearly proclaimed. We come to worship anticipating that we will be challenged and that our lives will be changed.
We also offer these special worship opportunities:
Maundy Thursday Worship Service with dinner - We alternate with the Rockmart Presbyterian Church. We're at Cedartown First Presbyterian on Odd numbered years.
Our unique Outdoor Easter Sunset Service - one hour before Sunset; and the
Cedartown Ministerial Association's Community-wide Thanksgiving Service - held the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Call the church office for place and time.
Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with Communion- December 24, at 7:00 p.m. dress is casual;

Our Church in Mission
We believe that we must live out our faith serving God in our world just as our Lord's message was inseparably linked to his acts of compassion, healing and justice.
This summer, our church is sending a team of 11 workers to joing with a larger group of missionary-minded people from St. Luke's Prebyterian Church in Dunwoody, GA to build a house in Piedras, Mexico with Constructores para Christos.
Our members can be found working at the Samaritan House and the Community Free Lunch program.
We actively support community groups such as Boy Scouts (one troop of Boy Scouts and one pack of Cub Scouts) and Girl Scouts (currently inactive)
We support the church's wider work through our denomination's regular offerings and other special giving opportunities (such as the work of Gideons International.)
We currently contribute to the support of Presbyterian missionaries in Brazil, the Gartrell's.
We are committed to looking at still other ways we can be involved in our community and in our world.
We invite you to work with us!
